Texturing In Mudbox

The good thing about the way texturing works in mudbox is that you can import an image as a stencil to project onto the sculpt. This allows you to basically paint on your texture

You can move around the stencil to fit your model by pressing S + one of the mouse buttons

S + Left Click Rotates

S +Middle Click Moves

S + Right Click Scales

This is especially useful if your model does not match up or you just want to use a certain part of you stencil to add something like skin pores on a face or Rust and weathering on something made of metal for instance.

I really like this way of texturing as it does not require any UV wrapping or guess work on the texturing side it saves a texture artist going back and forth into photoshop and maya to see that the projection works on a model. It is also more painterly as if you are painting a real sculpture. It allows you to see the dimension in a 3d object when working with 2d Textures.

For a First sculpt this went well. But there are a lot of obvious issues regarding proportion, the head is too big for the face and the eyes are out place as well. This was big problem when it came to texturing as the stencil image was different to the sculpt; many adjustments had to be made to the stencil in order to texture in the correct places.

I think the lesson learned here is there is only so much accuracy you can achieve using your eyes alone. Next time for a sculpt like this I will make a very simple mesh in Maya using image planes to accurately depict the reference then I will export that into a FBX for Mudbox to use this will make sculpting easier and texturing will be better also.
